Tips for Transporting Portable Buildings

Need to move a shed, storage building, or portable cabin? It's not as simple as tossing it on a trailer — but with the right prep, it’s doable without damaging your investment or risking a citation.

1. Measure Twice, Haul Once

Know the height, width, and length of the building. Some buildings are tall enough to hit low wires or overpasses — don’t guess.

2. Secure the Structure Properly

Use ratchet straps rated for the weight. Cross straps at angles. You don’t want shifting, bouncing, or swaying on the road.

3. Check State and County Rules

Some states require a wide load permit, escort vehicles, or restricted travel times. Call ahead if you're crossing state lines.

4. Protect the Roof and Corners

Tarping helps with wind and weather, but so does adding foam or padding to sharp edges and contact points during transport.

5. Don’t Cheap Out on the Trailer

Use a trailer rated for the weight and dimensions. Make sure tires, lights, and brakes are in check — especially for long hauls.

Closing Thought:
It’s not just about getting it there — it’s about getting it there in one piece. Take your time, prep well, and when in doubt, hire someone with experience.
